Abstract

The scientific lives of two Nobel laureates, I. P. Pavlov and I. I. Mechnikov, display many similarities. In their youth, both were attracted to studies of nature by the existing cult of science. Both had to withstand serious obstacles and ridicule while defending their original discoveries. Their respective laboratories developed similar approaches to collective work and to the relationship between the mentor and his younger associates and students.
