During the war year 1942 V. I. Vernadsky and his
family lived in evacuation in the township of Borovoe, Kazakhstan. There he
tinned writing his major book on the concept of the biosphere. Archives have pre
served a number of his letters, notes, diaries, and essays of the time, some of which
are published here with historical commentary.
