Abstract
New archival documents reveal some previously unknown episodes in the life of Timofei Ivanovich Rainov (1888–1958), an important thinker, philosopher, and historian of science of the early 20 th century. The article describes Rainov’s relations with his teachers, D. N. Ovsianniko-Kulikovsky and A. S. Lappo- Danilevsky, with colleagues and friends N. D. Kondratiev, E. L. Radlov, and L. S. Berg. The essay focuses in particular on Rainov’s contacts with V. I. Vernadsky, which played a crucial role in the establishment of the scholarly community of historians of science in Russia.
