Abstract
In 1923 Hermann Oberth published in Germany his book “Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen”, which generated a booming public interest in the idea of space travel and made him one of the pioneers of cosmonautics, alongside K. E. Tsiolkovsky. In 1982 Oberth visited the Soviet Union and was welcomed at the Yu. A. Gagarin Center for the Training of Cosmonauts. The author of the current article showed Oberth the Center’s training facilities and shares his recollections about that visit, including some previously unpublished photographs.
