Abstract

The paper deals with the life and works of an eminent Soviet biologist, academi cian V. N. Sukachev, the hundredth anniversary of whose birth is June 7, 1980. He was the founding father of several new research direction in biology, especially of biogeocenologv. His works plaved an important role in the development of geobotany and fores l science. He was a first-rate organizer of science; he founded several research departments in various institutes of the USSR.
