Abstract
Great discoveries or inventions often carry the names of their authors permanently attached to them, but this is not the case with spin magnetic resonances, both electronic (EPR) and nuclear (NMR). This article reminds readers of the scientists who discovered the effects (E. K. Zavoisky, E. M. Purcell, and F. Bloch, with their collaborators) and of how their ideas and inventions were received. It also describes contributions from other authors who either predicted or studied the effects, or invented important applications (including J. Larmor, P. Zeeman, O. Stern, C. J. Gorter, A. Abragam, S.A. Altshuler, B. Bleaney, and others).
