Abstract
The article offers a historical reconstruction of the development of Darwin’s views on the evolutionary process, based of his notebooks on the transmutation of species and the so-called «red notebook» (1836/7-1839). This new reading of Darwin’s notes does not confirm a widespread opinion about the roots of his evolutionism in Charles Lyell’s gradualism. On the contrary, Darwin’s first realistic model of evolution was a form of saltationism. Traces of sal-tationism continued in his notebooks up until the discovery of the idea of natural selection. In his subsequent models of evolution, Darwin was trying to uncover natural laws analogous to those of the Creator and relying upon the ideas of the economists Thomas Malthus and Adam Smith.
