Abstract
The unknown Vinogradski (documents and recollections). In the late 1990s, the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences received new and important documents from the Institute of Microbiology to complement its S. N. Vinogradski collection. The new acquisitions include the original of Vinogradski’s autobiographical memoirs, which were previously considered non-extant, three voluminous notebook diaries, and personal correspondence. These materials allow one to see new aspects of the life of a famous scientist, the discoverer of chemosynthesis and a pioneer of the ecological approach to microbiology, including his additional activities as a musician, an alpinist, a successful entrepreneur, and a popular writer. Some of the most interesting fragments from these documents are included in the publication.
